MyBandStock Makes Its Detroit Debut at TECH Cocktail
By Taylor on April 18, 2010
Just wanted to do a round-up after the great experience I had chatting and learning from the Detroit community and the movers and shakers in digital marketing this past weekend at TECH Cocktail and FutureMidwest 2010.
Working at a startup, it was an incredible experience to be surrounded by like-minded, ambitious people who are out to make a difference for the region and for innovation alone.
After being accepted by TECH Cocktail as one of the nine startups repping the Detroit area, I was quickly reminded by the conference-goers (and bar-hoppers, haha) that MyBandStock is something to be proud of, and that is worth continuing to fine-tune and preserve. The ingenuity of the concept and the passion behind The Music Revolution–placing fans a click away from their favorite artists, and making a music career still a plausible option for musicians–are the things that keep me going every day.

Fans, Where Do YOU Want to See MBS?
By Taylor on April 11, 2010
Throughout my MyBandStock internship, in everything that I have witnessed, it has been clear to me that MBS’s main goal is to provide shareholding fans with exactly what they want.
Along those lines, MyBandStock is looking to further get out into the community, and find the places where fans flock to get more of a feel of which bands people are listening to and what they’d like to see on MyBandStock.com. By attending local concerts and music festivals, we hope to talk to fans, spread awareness of the company, gather feedback and gain pledges for favorite artists.
As a fan, you’re probably wondering what we hope to do with all of this feedback. First off, we will be taking into account your thoughts and opinions and implementing those that garner the most response into the construction of the site. We want to create something that you’ll love. If you like it, we’ll [...]

What Do Fans Really Want?
By Taylor on April 4, 2010
It turned out to be quite the informative week this week as, in preparation for my blog, I got to talking to friends, family and random people about what they would like to see happen on MyBandStock.com. The more I talked to people, the more I learned about the kinds of features the site should have. Even as an intern for only four short months, I’ve already seen firsthand how the company sticks to the philosophy of connecting fans with their favorite artists, and how passionate MyBandStock is about designing a product that the fans highly value.
During my sophomore year in college, one of my journalism professors asked us the question, “What are people most interested in?” The answer was simple: people are interested in people. From the short conversations I had this week, the answer definitely still holds true. We know fans want to interact with their favorite artists. [...]

MyBandStock Reunites with My Dear Disco
By Taylor on March 29, 2010
Around this time last year, Ann Arbor-based My Dear Disco (MDD) was one of the highest grossing bands on the MyBandStock Alpha site, and also boasted the top number of fans. Out of the then approximately 500 shares sold, My Dear Disco accounted for 120! In the previous model, for $1 a share, fans competed to connect and interact with their favorite local artists in a huge way—by propelling the career of a deserving local band via crowdsourced support.
On the site, MDD’s ultimate goal was to raise $1,000 to fund the making of a music video. As fans purchased shares, they were rewarded with tickets to the premiere of the video and even with a chance to be on screen. Other perks included free copies of MDD albums or digital downloads, all based on number of shares accrued.
As the top band on the original MBS site, MDD played a crucial [...]

The Music Festival Roundup
By Taylor on March 23, 2010
My first music festival experience was in the summer of 2006 when I headed to Manchester, Tennessee to partake in the glory of what is known as Bonnaroo. Festivals are a music lover’s heaven—a heaven filled with an eclectic variety of activities to choose from and a unique atmosphere where fans build up a special camaraderie with other fans. For me, a music festival is like the music world’s Superbowl.
For the past week, the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas was underway, wrapping up its amazing lineup with talented performers from every part of the globe. France’s Electric Electric showcased its self proclaimed “epileptic dance noise,” while London’s indie-folk sweethearts Fanfarlo, and even Detroit’s own rapper FINALE were included in the mix.
Looking forward, this year’s festival lineups are unreal. For instance, California’s celeb-infested Coachella has big names on the bill for this April, including artists from the past and the present [...]

Looking Back. Looking Forward. NOW.

The Re-Launch Party
On January 29th, we had our company’s re-launch party at BTB Cantina on South University. The night was epic, to say the least, with DJ Bodyrock of My Dear Disco starting the party off right. The dance floor was alive with people and it was great to see the local community coming out to support us! So, to all of those people who showed up and had a great time enjoying the live performances of Legs 4 Daze and DJ Bodyrock, we say THANK YOU!
The Web Site
We have kept the philosophy the same from the beginning of MyBandStock, which is to offer fans exclusive digital access to their favorite artists. This time around, we are paving the way to provide you with access to some bigger names in the business.
For those of you who are regular visitors to the site, you have undoubtedly noticed the many changes we [...]

New Year, New Interns, New MyBandStock
By Taylor on February 6, 2010
What’s up everyone, my name is Lauren, and I am the most recent addition to the MyBandStock winter intern lineup! As a recent UM grad with plenty of time on my hands, I honestly can’t think of a better way to spend it than participating in MBS’s Music Revolution. Corny, right? Honestly though, I’ve only been at MBS for a week, but am already so so so impressed by the creativity, ambition, and hardworking demeanor of the staff. I’m still learning about all of the different perks and awesome initiatives that MBS has to offer, but here are a few things that I have loved about MyBandStock from the get–go.
1.The Leaders and the Best, At Their Best
I think we can all agree that college classes aim to teach us about the real world, exposing each of us to new ideas in preparation for a life of 9 to 5. But [...]

The Re-Launch: An Intern Prospectus
By Taylor on January 22, 2010
MY DEAL
Hey everyone! My name is Tina Ponder and I’m extremely glad to be MyBandStock’s public relations intern this semester. I wanted to work with MyBandStock because I love music and I especially love live performances. Some of my current favorite artists include Page France, Cotton Jones, Sondre Lerche, Discovery and Kid Sister. I’m so happy to be working with the company because the atmosphere is so exciting and everyone here is really cool.
WHAT IS THIS PLACE?
Upon first learning about the site and the company, it’s true that I wasn’t quite sure what MyBandStock was or how it worked. So, let me give you a quick rundown of MyBandStock. We all have favorite artists, right? So, let’s say your number one favorite band in the universe is Radiohead and you would sacrifice your first born child to have Front Man Thom Yorke write and record a song just for [...]

Into the New Music Industry – Valuing and Creating Relationships with Fans
By Taylor on March 2, 2010
When Radiohead announced in October of 2007 that they would be releasing their latest album in a free digital download format, shock and excitement spread like wildfire all over the web. Was this just a good PR move or a genius way to continue their legacy as one of the greatest bands of the century? I’d say all of the above. Many industry analysts claimed releasing In Rainbows free of charge was counterproductive in any regard to practical business sense. They weren’t requiring payment for their product—the product that essentially drives their career. Now, of course, the point could be made that “they are Radiohead”—they’re untouchable, well established and can do what they want! But, let’s face it: bands are always striving for ways to stay relevant, and if that means pulling a risky move, then so be it.
To Radiohead’s delight, the project turned out to be a success. Not [...]

30 Seconds to Mars: Fans Have a Say in Their Latest Tracks. Literally.
By Taylor on February 20, 2010
MyBandStock is a lot of things: a medium for artist expression, a place to connect with fellow music enthusiasts, a model for the social media of the future—but at the cornerstone of the MBS model is the focus on the fans. These days, it seems that more and more artists are incorporating this same ideal into both their music and their marketing strategies, experimenting with new creative outlets and user-generated content (UGC) to engage fans in a more meaningful, cost-effective manner. Whether you consider Radiohead’s fan-generated remixes of “Reckoner” or Beyonce’s invitation for fans to submit videos of their dance moves, increased fan input through UGC is an invaluable tool that can both leverage the impact of an upcoming album and foster a deeper sense of community within a fan base.
A truly novel example of the unlimited possibilities for fan/artist interaction is that of 30 Seconds to Mars, and its [...]

The Grammys: Are They Still Relevant?
By Taylor on February 12, 2010
“The Grammys = the old guard / old media propping up their puppets trying to convince the outside world (and each other) they’re relevant.”
- Trent Reznor, Nine Inch Nails
Earlier this week, Billboard projected that the Grammys had the largest viewing audience in the past six years. Billboard’s numbers reflect that people clearly still have great interest in music and that industry still is relevant. While I understand Reznor’s point, there is much to be said about the way new media is affecting the music industry and how it supplements old media.
True, new media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, blogs etc. have transformed traditional media and have become perhaps more visible as compared to the old. Music fans have more outlets than ever before to interact, discuss and share thoughts and opinions. The Internet also presents music fans with the opportunity to uncover a selection of tracks that far outnumbers those made readily [...]

Performance Rights Act = a clouded advocacy of music
By Taylor on July 23, 2009
Okay, I can’t help but to comment on the recent raging battle going on in Congress right now, the Performance Rights Act led by none other than Michigan Rep. John Conyers. The new legislative bill would require broadcast radio stations to pay royalties to artists in exchange for radio airplay. So far, the bill is in limbo, still lacking the support of 240 of the 435-member House of Representatives.
Check out the story in the Detroit Free Press that ran in Wednesday’s paper here.
Besides the logistical nightmare that will most definitely result should the bill pass and cause royalty rates to be negotiated based on station reach, station ad dollars, number of song plays, repetition of songs cutting into actual album sales and so on and so forth, this point-your-finger battle more or less serves no worthwhile purpose if the current music industry environment and future direction are taken into consideration.
